- An electric heater has no vent, and that is most of its appeal in a tight space. No flue, no combustion air, no clearance to the draft hood. What it needs instead is a dedicated circuit — typically 30 A on 10 AWG for a 4,500 W element — and the recovery is roughly half what a gas heater of the same tank size delivers.
- 40 ft is comfortably inside the limit for this category, but measure it as equivalent length: each 90° elbow adds roughly 5 ft and each 45° about half that. A run that measures 40 ft on the tape with four elbows is closer to 60 ft to the appliance.
- The circuit is the whole install. An electric tank in a space with no 240 V run available turns a cheap swap into an expensive one — and it is the reason many gas-to-electric conversions cost more than the heater.
- A drain pan with a line to somewhere is worth its cost the first time. Tanks fail by leaking, not by bursting, and they do it while nobody is home. Where the heater sits above finished space, most codes now require the pan and the drain; where they do not, install it anyway.
